Metropolitan Grand Lodge of London
At Grand Lodge in December 2002, the President of the Board of General Purposes reported that consultation was still in progress within London on the detail of the proposals for the formation of a Metropolitan Grand Lodge. Moreover, that the amendments to the Book of Constitutions of which he would be giving notice would themselves be subject to amendment before they were put to Grand Lodge in March for decision.
Later in that meeting, the Pro Grand Master announced that, in the light of representations from London Masons, the proposition to introduce the new distinction of Junior London Grand Rank was to be withdrawn.
The Board has subsequently made two further variations to the original proposals. The new Rule 60, as drafted, would give power to the Grand Master to rearrange boundaries of Metropolitan Areas, combining them with other Metropolitan Areas or Provinces, or to subdivide them.
This power would mirror that already enjoyed by the Grand Master under Rule 62 in relation to Provinces and Districts, and was included for the sake of consistency. The Board, however, wishes to stress that there is no present intention that the Grand Master should exercise this power, and to make that plain, recommends that it should be removed from the proposed Rule 60. Secondly, it has become clear that the title "Group Inspector" is regarded with disfavour by many Brethren in London and that the present designation employed by London Management of "Group Chairman" is preferred.
     The proposed changes were approved.
