Erasure of Lodges
The Board has received reports on 11
Lodges that have closed and surrendered
their Warrants. The Lodges are:
Unification Lodge No. 3455 (South Africa,
Eastern Division); Woodside Lodge No.
4062 (Cheshire); Victory Lodge No. 4128
(Cheshire); Ashburne Lodge No. 4348
(Durham); St Michael’s Birkenhead Lodge
No. 4615 (Cheshire), Manor of Estham No.
5346 (Surrey), Pax-Vera Lodge No. 6200
(Cheshire), Manor of Bosham Lodge No.
6297 (Sussex), Juventus Lodge No. 6473
(London), Lodge of Brotherhood No. 7578
(London), Penman’s Green Lodge No. 8384
(Hertfordshire).
Over recent years, the Lodges have found
themselves no longer viable. The Board
is satisfied that further efforts to save them
would be to no avail and therefore has
no alternative but to recommend that
they be erased. A Resolution to this effect
was approved.
Installed Masters’ Lodges
It has been suggested that the exemption
from Grand Lodge dues and Grand Charity
contributions proposed for Installed Masters’
Lodges will apply in respect of 2005 for those
Lodges whose financial year ends on 31
December. The Board rejects such an
interpretation of the Motion Pursuant to
Notice that appears at item 8 of the Paper
of Business and wishes to make it plain that
the exemption was at all times intended to
be introduced to coincide with the increase
in dues in 2006.
It considers, nevertheless, that it is
desirable to place the matter beyond
argument and accordingly notice of an
amendment to the Motion was moved
by the Grand Registrar as follows:
“That the words ‘with effect from 1 January
2006’ be inserted after the first word of (ii),
(iii) and (iv) of the Motion to amend the
Book of Constitutions at item 8 of the Paper
of Business.”
The original Motion to amend the Book of
Constitutions read:
The President of the Board of General
Purposes to move:
(i) That Rule 228(c) be amended to read
as follows:
“(c) The accounts shall be balanced each
year as at the 31st December, and shall be
audited by a firm of auditors recognised
under the Companies Acts elected annually
in June by the Grand Lodge. These accounts
when audited shall be circulated to every
Lodge not later than 30th April next
following for presentation and consideration
at the Quarterly Communication of the
Grand Lodge in June.”
(ii) That Rule 269 be amended by
substituting “June” for “March” in the
first paragraph and by adding a new third
paragraph as follows: “Provided further
that any Lodge in a Metropolitan Area,
Province, District or Group that is from
time to time determined by the Board
of General Purposes to be a Lodge the
membership of which is restricted to
Brethren who are Installed Masters but
which is otherwise open without further
restriction to all Brethren within the
relevant Metropolitan Area, Province,
District or Group shall pay annual dues
in respect of those Brethren only who are
not members of any other Lodge, and in
the case of a Brother who is a member only
of one or more such Lodges restricted to
Installed Masters the Lodge of which he
has been longest a member shall alone
pay annual dues in respect of him.”
(iii) That Rule 270 be amended by
substituting “June” for “March” in the
final line.
(iv) That Rule 271 be amended by
substituting “June” for “March” in the
first paragraph adding a new second
paragraph as follows:
“Provided that any Lodge in a
Metropolitan Area or Province that is from
time to time determined by the Board of
General Purposes to be a Lodge the
membership of which is restricted to
Brethren who are Installed Masters but
which is otherwise open without further
restriction to all Brethren within the
relevant Metropolitan Area or Province
shall pay annual contributions in respect of
those Brethren only who are not members
of any other Lodge, and in the case of a
Brother who is a member only of one or
more such Lodges restricted to Installed
Masters the Lodge of which he has been
longest a member shall alone pay the annual
contribution in respect of him.”
The amendment and the amended
Motion were approved.
