Grand Lodge Accounts 2004
The President of the Board presented the Report and Accounts for the year ended
31 December 2004. He said that these
show an operating deficit of £239,000 for the previous year. The major reason for
this deficit is the cost of nearly £2.5m for removing the asbestos in Freemasons’ Hall.
Although receipts from Lodges are down by approximately £250,000 compared
to the previous year, this is due to the formation of the Metropolitan Grand Lodge of London in 2003, so that both the income and expenditure for that area is no longer shown in Grand Lodge’s accounts. Savings have also been achieved in the production
of MQ and postage.
In spite of the large deficit, we are fortunate to benefit from a legacy of £395,000, net gains of £594,000 in total
on investments and the sale of a property. These amounts are largely non-recurring and should be regarded as part of Grand Lodge’s capital fund for investment.
During the year we also disposed of a painting, the subject of which was not Masonic, at a gain of £2.6m. Nevertheless, the proceeds form part of Grand Lodge’s heritage and therefore will be made available to the Library and Museum Charitable
Trust to maintain and expand the collection of Masonic exhibits.
Consequently, a donation of £926,000 was made this year and it is anticipated that further donations will be made in subsequent years.
The Accounts were adopted.
